L’histoire des distilleries du groupe Loch Lomond remonte à
1772, date à laquelle la distillerie Littlemill fut fondée, un point de repère essentiel dans l'histoire du whisky écossais puisqu'il s'agit de la plus ancienne distillerie pays.
En 1814, la première distillerie officielle Loch Lomond est
établie sur les rives ouest du lac Lomond, près de la petite ville de Tarbet, à quelques dizaines de kilomètres de Glasgow.
Un nouveau chapitre s’écrit lorsque la distillerie Loch Lomond est relocalisée à Alexandria, en 1965, permettant à celle-ci de se doter de nouveaux alambics pour la distillation. Ceux-ci viennent compléter la collection d’alambics à col droit hérités en partie de la distillerie Littlemill. La production de whisky single malt reprend l’année suivante, en 1966.
Malheureusement en 1984, la distillerie ferme ses portes,
comme beaucoup d’autres distilleries à cette époque en Écosse, sur fond de récession économique et de désintérêt pour le whisky. Fort heureusement, Alexander Bulloch et la société Glen Catrine rachète l’entreprise en 1985, puis la production de single malt reprend en 1987.
Poussée dans son élan, et toujours afin de produire les meilleurs whiskies possible, la distillerie accueille deux nouveaux alambics permettant de perfectionner son processus de distillation.
Nouveau tournant dans l’histoire de Loch Lomond, la distillerie commence la production de whisky à grain avec l’ajout d’alambics à colonne, dits « coffey still», faisant de celle-ci la première à produire à la fois du whisky single malt et single grain en Écosse.
Pour perpétuer la tradition et le savoir-faire ancestrale, la distillerie accueille deux nouveaux alambics traditionnels à col de cygne, augmentant significativement la qualité de nos whiskies.
Perfectionnant son art et l’intérêt grandissant pour le whisky de grain, Loch Lomond prend la décision de produire exclusivement son whisky de grain avec de l’orge malté.
Année charnière pour la distillerie, le Groupe Loch Lomond rachète celle-ci et lance un plan d’investissement ambitieux afin d’accroître, notamment, les capacités de vieillissement et garantir le processus de fermentation long, propre au style Loch Lomond.
Une troisième paire d'alambics à col droit est installée au sein de la distillerie, permettant de renforcer notre capacité à produire des whiskies de grande qualité qui ont fait notre renommée. Symboliquement, la distillerie Loch Lomond peut, à présent, produire plus de 5 millions de litres de whisky par an.
Aujourd'hui, la distillerie Loch Lomond est un lieu de savoir, de passion et d’expertise au service de la création de whiskies exceptionnels. Au fil des ans, la distillerie a pu produire, grâce à sa large collection d’alambics, de nombreuses expressions de whisky tout en perpétuant le style emblématique de Loch Lomond : un profil fruité, aux accents sucrés de miel notamment et très légèrement fumé.
Notre plus grande fierté est de faire perdurer cet héritage tout en continuant à écrire notre histoire avec un esprit novateur et dans le respect des traditions.
Our story has roots tracing back to 1772 with the establishment of the Littlemill Distillery, a pivotal landmark in Scotch whisky history as the oldest licensed distillery in the nation.
In this year, the original Loch Lomond Distillery took shape near Tarbet, resting towards the north-western end of the iconic Loch Lomond.
A new chapter was penned as the Littlemill Distilling Company opened the Distillery on its current site. The Distillery initially had only Straight Neck Pot Stills based on the designs developed at Littlemill earlier in the 1960s.
The distillery embarked on a new journey under the stewardship of the Bulloch family, who purchased it.
A testament to Loch Lomond’s commitment to innovation and quality, a second pair of Straight Neck Stills were installed in the distillery. This enhanced and scaled up distillation.
The Distillery saw the installation of a grain distillery, a pivotal addition that opened up new avenues for our whisky production. We are the only distillery in Scotland to have malt and grain production.
Embracing tradition whilst furthering the flavour creation journey, we supplemented our distilling operations with the addition of Traditional swan neck Pot Stills.
Our Continuous Stills began utilising malted barley.
Take over by the Loch Lomond Group with significant investment in the distillery including the addition of more washbacks allowing for increased capacity whilst retaining the crucial long fermentation.
A third pair of Straight Neck Stills graced our distillery. This bolstered our capacity to produce the exceptional Loch Lomond Whisky that we're renowned for. This brings our current malt capacity to 5 million litres per year.
Today, Loch Lomond Distillery is ascending to new heights. We take immense pride in our award-winning range of whiskies, our innovative distillery operations, and the dedicated team of experts who make it all possible.
